Nobody really cares about your appearance or hairstyle

Nobody really cares about your appearance or hairstyle

When changing your hairstyle, many people first think, “How will others see me?”
Will my friends say something? Will I stand out at work? Will people think I look strange?
But let me be honest.

Nobody actually cares that much about your appearance or hairstyle.

Of course, in the first few seconds people may notice: “Oh, you got a haircut,” or “Your color is brighter.”
But after that, they go back to their own lives. Nobody is spending their days constantly thinking about your hair.

Japanese people care too much about “what others think”

I have worked on countless clients’ hair in places like Tokyo’s Omotesando and London, on the front lines of beauty.
What I’ve noticed from seeing people around the world is that Japanese people especially tend to choose hairstyles based on “how others will see them.”

In Western countries, even with flashy colors or unique styles, people confidently say, “Because I like it.”
In Japan, however, since over 90% of society is the same ethnicity, it may be easier to feel uneasy or hesitant about being “different.”

Not fearing “being different” leads to happiness

A hairstyle that’s different, a lifestyle that’s different.
Choosing these things takes courage. But I want to say this loud and clear:

The more someone chooses without fearing difference, the more their self-esteem grows, and the richer their life becomes.

In fact, people in Japan who force themselves to stay “normal” often look tired.
On the other hand, those who enjoy the styles they love look vibrant. I believe hairstyles can even influence a person’s happiness.

You can ignore those who attack you

If someone criticizes your hairstyle, appearance, or way of living…
That’s not your problem. It’s their values and their lack of emotional space.

You don’t need to be swayed by such words.
It’s your life, and you are the one who lives it.

Be yourself with the hairstyle you love

Let me say it one more time.

Nobody really cares about your appearance or hairstyle.

That’s why you should boldly choose the style you love.
Rather than playing it safe just to please others, a hairstyle that lifts your own mood will surely make your everyday life richer.

As a hairdresser, I will wholeheartedly support that choice.
