What Matters More Than Technique in a Hairdresser’s Work

The essence of being a hairdresser is not just about “technique.”
Of course, technique is very important. But there is a reason why I intentionally don’t post much on my website or social media about trendy methods like “We can do ○○ color!” or “We specialize in ○○ cuts!”
The Importance of “Mindset” Beyond Technique
Even with the same hairstyle, the result can be completely different depending on who cuts it and with what mindset they face the client.
Looking only at surface-level techniques or before-and-after photos doesn’t show whether a particular service is truly necessary for that person. Hair texture, bone structure, lifestyle, values… everyone is different.
That’s why I focus not only on what I “can do,” but on considering together whether that technique is really right for the individual.
What’s Truly Needed Is “Dialogue”
Trends and techniques, when imposed one-sidedly, are meaningless if they don’t fit the client.
That’s why I try to talk with clients as much as possible before confirming an appointment, sharing ideas in advance. It can be by email, LINE, Instagram, WhatsApp—anything works.
Having that exchange beforehand makes it much smoother to shape their wishes when they come to the salon.
Especially with first-time clients, I sometimes spend 30 minutes to an hour on consultation. This ensures both sides are satisfied and can enter the service with peace of mind.
Technique Is a “Means,” Not the “End”
What I value most is the question: “What is the best approach for this person?”
The latest techniques or trendy designs mean nothing if they don’t suit the individual. On the other hand, even a simple cut can become something truly special depending on the mindset and process behind it.
As a hairdresser, the most important thing is not to flaunt surface-level skills, but to focus on “how we face our clients.”
That, I believe, is what matters more than technique.
