Cold Perm vs. Digital Perm: Which One Suits You Best? A Simple Guide to the Differences and How to Choose

“I want to get a perm, but what’s the difference between a cold perm and a digital perm?”
This is a question I often receive from my clients.
In fact, the chemical solutions used are almost the same, but the application methods and the suitable hair styles are different.
The biggest difference is whether or not heat is used.
Please read on for some hints to help you decide which type might suit you best.
What is a Cold Perm?
A cold perm is a traditional method that uses only chemicals and rods to curl the hair.
It doesn’t involve any heat—the shape is formed by the power of the solution alone.
It’s great for short styles or for those who want more volume at the top.
What is a Digital Perm?
A digital perm uses chemicals and rods, along with heat between 40–70°C, to set the curls.
Thanks to the added heat, the resulting waves are typically bigger, more defined, and longer-lasting.
Recommended for hair longer than 20cm or those who want large, soft waves.
Which One Should You Choose?
Here’s a simple comparison to help you see which perm suits you best:
- Cold Perm is recommended for:
・Those without sensitive skin
・People who want more volume at the roots
・Short hairstyles - Digital Perm is recommended for:
・Those with sensitive skin or scalp concerns (can be done without touching the scalp)
・Hair that is longer than 20cm
・People who want large curls or gentle, flowing waves
By the way, both cold perms and digital perms are the same price.
The cost does not change based on hair type or length. I’ll recommend the best method based on your needs.
