Not Just Trends—A Hairstyle That Reflects Your True Self | Hairdresser Taka

“I’m not really sure what hairstyle suits me best.”
If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re definitely not alone.

In this post, I’d like to share the perspective I’ve developed over 15+ years as a hairstylist, working with all kinds of hair and people—what it really means to find a hairstyle that suits you.

More than just following trends, I believe in helping you discover and highlight your natural charm and individuality.
I hope this page can inspire a fresh step forward for you.

Even Perfect Technique Isn’t Enough to Make Someone Truly Happy

When I first started as a hairstylist, I was obsessed with perfecting my technique:

  • Precise, flawless cuts
  • Glossy, even-toned color with no blotches
  • Minimal-damage perms or straightening

I truly believed that was “what’s best for the customer.”

But then, something felt off—sometimes even with a perfect finish, my clients looked… a little unsatisfied.

That’s when I realized:
I had been treating the hair separately from the person’s feelings.

Hair isn’t just a surface thing—it deeply affects how we feel, too.
These days, I focus less on just perfection, and more on creating a style that naturally brings out someone’s smile.

What Does It Mean to Bring Out “Your True Self”?

To me, a hairstyle that truly suits someone is one that
addresses their concerns, and fits their hair texture, facial structure, and lifestyle.

As we age or our lifestyle changes, so do our worries and preferences.

Honestly, I’ve noticed it in myself, too—now that I’m in my 30s, I think things like, “I want a bit more volume on top,” or “I’d like to look a little younger” (laughs).

I imagine many of my clients feel the same way.

That’s why I always start by asking: “What’s been on your mind lately when it comes to your hair?” From there, we figure out what kind of style makes sense for you now.

There’s no one “right answer.”
If it feels natural and comfortable for you—that’s what truly suits you.

Creating a Comfortable Space to Be Honest

It takes courage to speak openly, especially with a hairstylist you’re meeting for the first time.

Many of my clients start out quiet, then gradually open up over time as we build trust across visits.

I don’t force conversations during sessions.

Sometimes I speak less on purpose—because when clients are ready to share, I want to be fully present to receive it.

Often, their true feelings are hidden in a single offhand comment. I always aim to pick up on those subtle cues.

Small Changes Can Lighten the Mood

You don’t need a dramatic transformation to feel refreshed.

  • Shift your part slightly
  • Add some softness to your bangs
  • Try a touch of color, perm, or straightening in just one section

Even small tweaks can make people say, “Wow, I feel different!”

Looking in the mirror becomes more fun—and that tiny bit of confidence can ripple through your whole day.

When Clients Change, It’s the Best Reward

Some of my long-term clients have:

  • Stopped dyeing their gray hair and embraced their natural tone
  • Let go of straightening treatments and explored softer, more authentic styles

They’ve found new sides of themselves through these shifts—often small, but incredibly meaningful.

“I didn’t know I could look like this.”
“Just changing my hair made me feel brighter.”
I never get tired of hearing comments like these.

It’s not just about technique.
It’s about helping each person express who they truly are through their style.
