What I Value in Hair Perms / International Hairdresser TAKA

Introduction
Hair design consists of two main elements:
“Shape” and “Color”.
Shape is expressed through haircuts, perms, and straightening.
Color is achieved through hair coloring.
Perms and straightening actually share the same chemical mechanism—it’s just a matter of whether the hair is curled or straightened.
Because of social media, curly or wavy styles often get attention for their visual impact, but the true purpose of perms and straightening is “correction”—adjusting to suit each person’s bone structure and hair type.
Perms add shape. Straightening subtracts it.
If this concept is misunderstood, it may be better to style hair at home using tools like irons or dryers.
However, there are styles and benefits that only perms or straightening can offer.
In this post, I’ll focus on perms in detail.
There are two main types: cold perms and digital perms.
The perms offered at Hairdresser Taka are not simply for adding curls—they are designed to enhance your quality of life and bring out your unique charm.
① Suitable for All Hair Types, Nationalities, and Backgrounds
Whether your hair is thick or thin, straight or curly, coarse or soft, most hair types can receive a perm treatment.
However, exceptions include bleached, chemically straightened, or highly damaged hair. Please consult with me in advance in such cases.
② Hairstyles You Can Recreate in 5 Minutes
I propose hairstyles that are easy for you to style on your own in a short amount of time.
If, based on your lifestyle, I feel that styling it yourself might be difficult, I won’t recommend it.
That’s because hair design greatly impacts your quality of life.
“Wash and Go.”
With permed hair and natural drying, you may be able to achieve the perfect style in under a minute.
③ Creating Volume at the Crown
Regardless of hairstyle, face shape, or age, I place importance on naturally creating volume at the crown of the head.
This is because crown volume makes it easier to balance the overall design.
This is especially beneficial for those with wide or square facial structures, or those who are concerned about their face shape.
④ Minimal Scalp & Hair Stress / Cold Perm
There are more than 20 roller sizes available for wrapping hair.
In the industry, it’s common to choose a roller that matches the desired curl size.
However, I use rollers about three sizes smaller than usual.
Why? Because I want to use milder chemicals to reduce stress on your scalp and hair.
Using weaker perm solutions with standard rollers may result in curls not forming well.
By using smaller rollers that bend the hair more tightly, I can create the ideal curl design even with gentler chemicals.
I usually recommend cold perms to those who:
・Don’t have sensitive skin or scalp conditions
・Want volume from the crown
・Short hair with a length of 20 cm or less
⑤ No Chemical Contact with Scalp / Digital Perm
Even with mild solutions like in section ④, it’s important not to let chemicals touch the scalp for long-term scalp health (preventive beauty).
Digital perms apply chemicals only to the hair, without touching the scalp.
Using heat (40–80°C), curls are formed more gently than with cold perms, allowing for even weaker solutions.
The downside is that because it uses heat, digital perms cannot be applied close to the scalp.
This makes it harder to add volume at the crown.
Also, if your hair isn’t long enough to reach your eyes, a digital perm may not be possible.
Considering this, I recommend digital perms for those who:
・Have sensitive skin or scalp conditions
・Hair design for lengths over 20 cm
・Want large curls or waves
Conclusion
Perms aren’t just for people with straight hair.
Even those with natural waves can benefit, and partial perms can also be very effective.
The true essence of a perm isn’t just a curly or wavy style—it’s about correction.
Correction means improving what you might see as flaws, while enhancing your natural strengths and expressing your individuality.
That is the kind of suggestion I always aim to provide to every client.
