The Happiness Discovered After Losing Hair — What One Client Taught Me|Hairdresser Taka

Ten years ago, one of my clients was diagnosed with cancer.
Due to chemotherapy, they lost all of their hair.
They said not a single strand remained on their head.

Today, they are living well and healthy.
The illness is completely cured, and their hair has fully grown back just like before.
You wouldn’t even notice their past if they didn’t tell you.

But to me, their past speaks more about their “way of living” than just their “hairstyle.”

Someone Who Truly Understands the Blessing of Having Hair

This client visits my salon regularly.
During consultations, they excitedly say,
“Oh, this looks nice,” “That’s beautiful too,” “I’d love to try this style!”
Just talking about hairstyles seems to make them truly excited.

Trends and others’ opinions don’t matter.
They focus only on “how they feel now” and “whether it suits them,”
enjoying their look with complete freedom.

Gray hair?
“Maybe I’ll go blue,” “Red sounds fun too.”
Even gray hair becomes part of their joy.

Curly hair?
“This part has a stronger wave,”
“So I want a hairstyle that makes the most of that movement.”
Instead of denying their hair type, they embrace and make use of it.

They fully accept their hair, appearance, and personality—
and even enjoy it.

I think that’s truly an incredible thing.

The Strength of Someone Who Once Lost Everything

The experience of losing all their hair.
I can only imagine the fear and struggle they must have faced.

But they don’t dwell on the past.
Rather, they face the present moment with their whole heart.

Even with curls, even with gray hair—just having hair is a blessing.
That’s how they feel, which is why they always respond positively to my suggestions,
smiling brightly in front of the mirror.

Every time I see them,
I’m reminded that “creating hairstyles is truly an amazing job.”

A Mindset That Focuses on What You Have, Not What You Lack

People tend to focus on what they don’t have.

If they have a lot of hair: “I want to reduce the volume.”
If they have thin hair: “I wish it were thicker.”
Curly hair: “I want it straight.”
Straight hair: “I want more movement.”

Of course, helping people achieve those wishes is part of my job.
But before that, how can we make the most of the “materials” we already have?
How can we learn to love our own hair?
That’s what this client taught me is truly important.

What I Want to Continue Sharing Through My Work

As a hairstylist, of course I’ll continue refining my skills.
But more than that, I deeply value the idea of “enriching lives through hair.”

Every time I meet a client like this,
I’m moved and reminded of why I do this—and I grow from it too.

What I want to tell everyone reading this blog is:
“Just having hair is already something to be truly grateful for.”

No matter your age—
even if your hair is thinning, gray, or curly—
the very act of expressing yourself through your hair
is already something beautiful.

In Closing

For everyone who visits my salon,
I want them to leave feeling even more in love with themselves.
That’s the intention behind every cut I make each day.

Hair isn’t just a body part.
It’s part of someone’s life story.

That’s why I want to treat each person’s hair with care and sincerity.
