What Makes a Hairstyle Stylish?

What exactly is a “stylish hairstyle”?
You can mimic trendy styles, celebrity hair colors, perms, or straightening you see on social media or in magazines. But I believe that alone doesn’t make it truly stylish.
The “Intention” Behind a Hairstyle
To me, a stylish hairstyle is one that makes others think, “That person’s hair looks great.”
It’s not just about being well-groomed. It’s about having a clear reason behind the look:
- “This is who I am, and that’s why I wear this hairstyle.”
- “This is how I want to live, and this is how I express it.”
That’s what I mean by a hairstyle with intention.
It doesn’t have to be bold or flashy.
Even a simple style can be very attractive when it reflects a deep understanding and acceptance of oneself.
On the other hand, styles that simply follow trends or are made to please others tend to lack real appeal.
What I Learned While Working in London
When I lived in London, surrounded by people from many different cultures, I strongly felt something.
People of all races, nationalities, skin tones, eye colors, and values understand their identity and express it confidently.
That’s why their hairstyles and fashion were all so different, and each person’s individuality really stood out.
They didn’t need the latest hairstyle trends to look cool or attractive—just an honest expression of who they are.
The Importance of Self-Expression in Japan
Japan is a country where most people are of the same ethnicity.
That can make it hard to recognize or express our differences, and expressing individuality can feel difficult.
But that’s exactly why it’s important to understand ourselves and affirm, “This is who I am.”
As a hairdresser, I try to accept each person’s unique face, skin, hair texture, and head shape, and propose a hairstyle that brings out their individuality.
It’s never about creating something extreme.
It’s about starting with the affirmation: “You are great just as you are.”
That, to me, is what makes a hairstyle truly stylish and authentically you.
