“What Living Abroad Taught Me About the Richness of Japanese Nature – Reducing Stress for Healthier Hair”

I spent many years working in the heart of London.
Both Japan and the UK have their strengths and areas for improvement. This isn’t about which is better overall, but today I want to talk about “nature.”
Japan is an incredibly nature-rich country by global standards. It has four seasons, forests, rivers, oceans, and lives in harmony with beautiful flowing water. If you live abroad and visit Japan, I highly recommend not only exploring major cities like Tokyo or Osaka, but also taking time to enjoy its natural beauty.
The changing seasons, the clear air and abundant water sources, and the plants and animals that live within them—all these aspects of nature found in Japan have a powerful ability to calm the mind.
The Relationship Between Stress and Hair
Modern life is often referred to as a “stress society,” and many of us carry a heavy mental load.
The internet and social media, relationships, disrupted sleep schedules, societal pressures, and family issues… Despite material abundance, many people still don’t feel “happy,” and stress may be the root cause.
Stress also affects the hair and scalp.
Lack of proper sleep, poor dietary balance, and insufficient physical activity—all of these factors can diminish the shine, volume, and overall condition of your hair and scalp.
The Healing Power of Japan’s Natural Environment
London also has incredible cultural diversity, and I saw many people living vibrant lives. However, when it comes to the richness of nature, I believe Japan is clearly superior.
Humans originally lived near forests and rivers. On a genetic level, we’re wired to relax when we’re in nature. Listening to the sound of the ocean or gazing at green mountains calms the mind—this is not a coincidence.
That’s why it’s so important for people living in cities to intentionally spend time in nature. Just visiting a park, walking by a river, or enjoying seasonal flowers can help ease both physical and mental stress.
What You Can Do to Rejuvenate Your Hair
To keep your hair healthy and beautiful, it’s not enough to rely only on external care like shampoos and treatments.
- Relaxing in natural surroundings
- Eating colorful, nutrient-rich meals
- Getting quality sleep
These habits indirectly contribute to the health of your scalp and hair.
As a hairstylist, I naturally care deeply about designing beautiful hairstyles for my clients. But before that, I strongly believe that true beauty in hair begins with a healthy body and mind.
That’s why I encourage both residents of Japan and those visiting to take time to connect with Japanese nature. Reducing stress through such experiences can lead to healthier hair—and a healthier heart.
✂️ Hair is a mirror that reflects the state of your body and mind.
Let nature support you in easing stress and living each day a little more lightly.
