The Importance of Knowing What’s Happening Inside Your Hair

A salon service is not just a “task to tidy up the finish.”
With cutting, coloring, perming, or straightening, changes are always happening inside the hair.

For example――

  • Color works through “oxidation” to fix pigments into the hair
  • A perm works through “reduction” to rearrange the hair bonds
  • Straightening works through “reduction and heat” to lock in the shape

Each style only comes to life as an “expression” through these scientific processes.

Knowing Both Benefits and Risks Leads to Prevention

Every service brings positive effects, but there are always risks as well.
For example, with color, the benefit is “freedom in expression and design.”
On the other hand, “residual alkalinity” or “oxidative damage” are risks.

If you repeat services without this knowledge, your hair can suffer more damage than expected, leading to frustrations like:
“Why does the finish feel dry?” or “Why doesn’t it take the shape I wanted?”

This is why I always explain before any service, and make it a priority to find the best choice together with my clients.

Technique Is a Balance of “Addition” and “Subtraction”

When performing a service, what I am always mindful of is
the balance between “addition” and “subtraction.”

  • Perms and colors are techniques that “add change” to the hair.
  • Cuts and straightening, on the other hand, are techniques that “subtract unnecessary parts to refine.”

Only when these two work in harmony can a design truly bring out the individuality of the hair.

The Hairdresser’s Responsibility Is to Think Ahead Into the Future

Techniques are not only about “making you beautiful right now.”
Today’s service directly connects to the condition of your hair in six months or a year.

  • If I leave this damage untreated now, how will the next color turn out?
  • If I choose this chemical, how will the hair texture change in half a year?

I believe that making suggestions while imagining the future state of the hair is part of a hairdresser’s responsibility.

For clients, time at the salon is also a “moment of transformation.”
That is why, if you can understand even a little about the meaning of the techniques and what is happening inside the hair,
you can enjoy the service with both reassurance and confidence.

Even for those with no knowledge about hair, I explain things in an easy-to-understand and honest way,
sharing the truth behind the techniques as I perform them.
