Does Spending More Time at the Salon Mean Better Service? What Truly Creates Customer Satisfaction

At a hair salon, some people feel that they received careful service because their appointment took a long time, while others leave completely satisfied even though the service finished sooner than expected.
So, what truly defines great service?
I believe it means providing exactly what the client wants—and only as much as they need.
Focus on What Matters Most, Not on Spending More Time
Hairdressing is a skilled profession.
Because of that, it’s natural for hairstylists to want to perfect every small detail.
Of course, spending time carefully refining the areas that concern the client is extremely important.
However, spending extra time on areas the client isn’t concerned about doesn’t necessarily result in better service.
For example, imagine a client is only concerned about their bangs, but the stylist spends most of the appointment refining the back of the haircut.
On the other hand, if the client’s biggest concern is the silhouette at the back, carefully adjusting only the front and sides won’t lead to true satisfaction either.
The first priority is understanding which part matters most to the client.
Using your time and technical skills where they matter most is what creates real value.
Finishing Earlier Can Also Be Great Service
Some people may believe that spending more time automatically means better work.
However, what clients truly value is not spending more time inside the salon.
If they’re happy with the final result, a shorter appointment gives them more time for the rest of their day.
Of course, services such as shampooing, head spa treatments, and relaxation experiences offer value through the time itself.
On the other hand, for haircuts, coloring, perms, and hair straightening, I believe the ideal is not spending more time than necessary, but achieving complete satisfaction in the shortest reasonable amount of time.
Hairstylists are both craftspeople and designers.
That’s why it’s important not to prioritize our own preferences, but to understand what the client truly wants and focus our skills on those needs.
Great service is not about doing more.
It’s about identifying what is truly necessary for each client and using the right amount of time and technical skill to achieve it.
I believe that is the most important responsibility of a hairstylist.
