The Easiest Way to Avoid Feeling “This Isn’t Quite What I Wanted” After a Haircut

The Easiest Way to Avoid Feeling “This Isn’t Quite What I Wanted” After a Haircut

After getting a haircut at the salon,

“It’s a little different from what I had in mind.”

One reason clients sometimes feel this way is that,

during the initial consultation,
the client and the hairdresser may have been imagining different things.

This can happen.

There may be technical reasons in some cases,
but there is also an important communication point to keep in mind at the salon.

It’s Difficult to Describe a Hairstyle Using Words Alone

For example,

“I want a short haircut.”

Even then, different people imagine different types of short hair.

Some people picture a very short style that exposes the ears, while others imagine a longer short bob.

Or,

“I just want the ends trimmed a little.”

That phrase is also vague.

Does it mean 1mm, 5mm, or 1cm?

“I want it lighter.”

This phrase can also mean different things.

Some people want only a little weight removed, while others want it significantly lighter.

This does not mean the hairdresser is wrong, nor does it mean the client is wrong.

Words themselves are often ambiguous.

Even between native speakers of the same language, differences in interpretation happen.

And when meeting a hairdresser for the first time, it is not easy for both people to have exactly the same image in mind.

Photos Communicate More Information Than Words

That is why I place great importance on sharing photos, especially with first-time clients.

“Is this the kind of look you mean?”

“Is this about the length you want?”

“Is this close to the texture you’re looking for?”

Looking at photos together allows us to share a large amount of information in just a few seconds.

Length.

Weight.

Lightness.

Shape.

Movement.

Bangs.

Volume.

Photos help communicate subtle details that can be difficult to explain with words alone.

This applies not only to haircuts.

The same is true for hair color, perms, and straightening services.

Hairstyles contain many elements that are based on feeling and perception.

Design, atmosphere, and texture cannot always be fully expressed through words.

That is why photos are so important.

When the hairdresser and client are working toward the same goal,

“This isn’t quite what I expected.”

becomes much less likely.

Before visiting a salon, save even one photo that is close to your ideal hairstyle.

That alone can make a significant difference in your satisfaction with the result.

I personally place special importance on sharing images with first-time clients.

Starting the service with both of us looking at the same finished image.

I believe that is one of the most important factors in creating a result that truly satisfies both the client and the hairdresser.
